house paint

So I can officially say I have painted every square inch of our house, trim, door, ceiling included people. I don't recommend it. Picking out paint colors is more difficult that it sounds so I have made a list of my top five tips
  • Never pick out the color in the store. It always looks different on your walls. I always tape the paint samples to the wall and look at it 24 hours before picking the color.
  • Always go lighter than what you think. Color always looks darker when it covers your walls. If you like an ocean blue for ex, have them mix it at 50%.
  • In your bedroom, pick a color that flatters your skin tone. Sounds silly but do it and you will love it.
  • Buy the expensive paint and Purdy brushes. It will end up costing the same anyway because you have to buy less paint than if you bought the cheap stuff.
  • Take into consideration windows. If there are small or no windows, go even lighter; for north facing windows, go warmer; and for south facing windows, go cooler.

If you have been to my house, most of it is painted in a version of BM gray owl which I love. Benjamin Moore has a great website but the only place you can get their paint is at Jones Paint and Glass, and I have only had unpleasant experiences with them. So I have my amazing Home Depot guy that matches everything for me. Happy painting :)

How about I just hire you to pick all the colors when I paint a house?

Great tips Kara. I painted most of our main walls a tan color and the trim white. I couldn't take the green walls anymore. I haven't done our bedroom yet. It's on the list.

Really great tips! Much better than having to repaint the room!!! I agree...we'll just have you pick the colors! =)
